Supplements for Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can be a very frustrating disease from both a patient and a physician perspective. I am often asked for advice regarding treatment and prevention.

Unlike a cataract for which surgery can instantly and safely restore lost vision, there is no procedure available today to restore vision loss from dry macular degeneration which is the most common form. Good nutrition, cessation of smoking, and certain supplements can decrease visual loss and slow progression of AMD. Dark green vegetables including spinach and kale are especially helpful. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) demonstrated that certain minerals and antioxidant vitamins including vitamins C, E, beta carotene and zinc can decrease the risk of AMD. Other studies suggest that lutein, a pigmented compound, and its cousin zeaxanthene may help prevent advanced AMD.

My best recommendation at this time for patients with AMD or at risk for AMD is to take a supplement containing vitamins C, E, beta carotene, zinc, and lutein and zeaxanthene. Bilberry may also be useful. I have researched the preparations available and am quite impressed with Optiplus, a product of the Key Company. I now carry this product in my office. It may also be available at some pharmacies (no presciption required) or may be purchased directly from the company. I have negotiated with the company to give my patients a 20% discount off the catalog price. Please contact my office if you have any questions regarding supplements for AMD.

On a personal level, I have always had a very strong interest in nutrition and fitness. Recently I have felt impressed to provide motivation and information to my patients in this area to enhance not only ocular health but general health and well being as well. I don't believe in fads and gimmics but do believe there are a few supplements that are genuinely valuable.

Many studies have demonstated the cardiovascular and general benefits of essential fatty acids (omega 3 and omega 6) found in salmon and a few other foods. Supplemental fish oil capsules can ensure an adequate intake of these important nutrients. Fish oil capsules can be obtained from most pharmacies. I personally use a fish oil product from the Key Company called Samolinic.

Finally, a single low dose aspirin a day thins the blood slightly and decreases inflammation in the body. These changes reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Aspirin may not be recommended if you have a bleeding disorder or stomach ulcer.
